Afghanistan Earthquake Kills Over 600, Injures 1,300 in Eastern Provinces

On Sunday, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, resulting in widespread destruction and significant loss of life. Local officials and the United Nations reported that over 600 people were killed and more than 1,300 injured, primarily in Kunar province. An additional dozen fatalities occurred in Nangarhar province.

The earthquake struck approximately 17 miles east of Jalalabad, near the Pakistan border, just before midnight, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Geological Survey. Afghan health officials noted that several villages in Kunar, including Sholt, Arit, and Mamagal, were nearly destroyed, with others sustaining severe damage.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, and some injured individuals have been evacuated. Government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid expressed sorrow over the tragedy, highlighting the loss of life and property in the affected region
